Jerry, you have done a wonderful job with your families web site!!
The Neuenschwander family (my maiden name) is looking to do a site and
yours gave us some good ideas to start with!! I will find out about the
documents and artifacts of Rev. John Knierim that you mentioned and see if
they still exist. The fire at the German Valley (now Valley Center)
Church in 1985 burned everything. But some papers were kept elsewhere.
If there any papers left, you are welcome to them. You said that you and
your wife came to the Church's 100th celebration, I was there also. I
grew up the first house west of the church and just 3/4 mile from the John and
Nancy Knierim homeplace. I have a foundation rock that was in the old
cellar of that home. My son brought it to Iva a couple of years ago
and last year she called and wanted us to have it back. She said that
she had too many family members to split the special rock up with!!
She was a very special lady. Sunday is our Church 127th celebration and
I will check on this info that you need. Take care, Cindy.

From: Dawn Vancs CommentsDear Jerry, Hell-o! I have found out so much more about my family than I knew when I first contacted you. It has been exciting and interesting and I can’t thank you enough for including me in the family stuff even with the spelling change. I have found two branches of the family (Mary in Tenn. and Robert in Indiana) that have kept the old spelling of the name. I converse with them often and we have been sharing what information we have. I I have pictures of Augustus and Hattie who are my gr. gr. grandparents. My Aunt Naomi (wife of the second Harvey) shared those and others with me and what treasures they are! It is a thrill to have them. I also have their (Augustus and Hattie’s) marriage certificate which is framed on my wall. This document is huge (18x20 inches) and is 130 years old! It is a little damaged because it was rolled in a tube and got water damage, but it is wonderful to have. Aunt Naomi gave it to me! Robert and Mary have also shared the pictures that they have with me and it is so wonderful to look at these people. Mary shared a three generation picture which was taken in 1901. It is a picture of Vincent (from whom she is descended) and his family. Anyway, I was thrilled to hear from you. I thought that you had forgotten about me! Sending my thanks for your help! Dawn

From: Daniel Wilson, MD CommentsJerry, Surfing the net I found your oblique query on Kneirim. This is a tiny (pop. ~ 60) town in Calhoun County. It is part of the Manson School District. I gre up inmanson where my dad was the doctor for the northern part of Calhoun County, including Knierim. Knierim was a typical railroad right-of-way town. That is, the Illinois-Central RR established settlements every few miles adjacent to its tracks. The villages (including Knierim and Manson, I believe) were named after mid-level executives at the RR Main Offices in Chicago. Hope that helps! Daniel Wilson, MD

From: grace miazza [gmiazza@earthlink.net] Sent: Sunday, August 16, 1998 3:36 AM To: jerry@knierim.net Subject: Additional Knierim's ? I am trying to locate information on Knierim’s in my family tree, and specifically information on living cousins. My great grandfather was William John Knierim. He was born on June 20, 1863 in Iowa (1900 census, death and marriage certificates). His mother was either named Katherin, born Dec 1830 in Germany(1900 census for Johnson Co., Iowa and death certificate) who at that time had 5 living children with 3 deceased and/or her name was Barbara C. (Willis) Knierim where the C may stand for Catherine (marriage certificate Johnson Co.). She immigrated to this country in 1853 according to the 1900 census. His father’s name was John Knierim (death and marriage certificate) and was born in Germany and was not alive in 1900. William married Emma Elizabeth Beck on Jan 1, 1903. Her parents were Henry Beck and Anna (Spragler) (according to marriage certficate) or Julia Ann (according to the 1870 cesus which is also the year she died, believed poisoned). Emma was the youngest of three children at the time of her mother’s death. William died in 1906 leaving my Grandmother, Gertrude aged 17 months, and Emma alone. The circumstances of his death are unfortunate. He was at St. Luke’s hospital while regaining his conscience after exploratory surgery. The nurse that was supposed to be present wasn’t, so as he was waking up, he thought it was time to go to work and proceeded to walk outside a window and fell and died within the next day or two. His death certificate says that he died of stomach trouble of some kind and referred to a fast he had undertaken as a contributing factor. He is buried in Riverside Cemetary in Denver, CO. Any information that you might have would be enormously appreciated. Sincerely, Grace E. Miazza

It appears that you also live in Arizona (I live in Gilbert, AZ) so we have that in common. More to the point, I see mention of a John Knierim that originated in Germany. (yeah, about every 3rd or 4th male in the family is John or David) My question is: When did he land in the US? Was he perchance on a boat in 1856? Dad has a copy of the manifests that lists several John Knierims (all related, of course) on a ship that left Bremen in (if I remember right)1856 or thereabouts. That is as far back as we’ve been able to trace our lineage so far. I’d be very interested in any information you can shed on the subject. Also, does your particular branch pronounce Knierim "can AIR um"? There is a branch I’ve heard about that the K is silent... Thanks, Ken Knierim Gilbert, AZ http://fishtank.phx.inficad.com/ (yup, it does work. It’s a slow link) P.S. My grandfather was from Missouri. He moved to Montana during the Depression to work as a doctor on the WPA project building a dam on the Missouri River in eastern Montana. He liked the area and the people and stayed. I moved to Arizona to go to DeVry in ‘82. I’ve moved around a bit but keep coming back to the desert because of the stuff to do and there are jobs here. I like being employed for some reason.... And I’m trying to piece together as much of the family tree as I can.

My g-g-grandmother was Louise (Lusia) Knierim Sander, b.1850, d. 1899, both in St. Louis. According to a local historian, Mr. Ross Waggoner, her father was John Knierim b. 1829 Germany, d.1901. Her mother was Anna Katherina Kehr, b.1823 Germany, d. 1881. I have visited their burial sites here in St. Louis. I am just starting to look for documents to back this up. JerryThanks for your prompt reply! Here are the addresses that you requested: Both aunts are widowed and living on their own. Aunt Velma takes care of a son (Jimmy) who is one of her twins who was injured at birth and is unable to live on his own. His brother John lives in Kansas City with his wife and daughter. A sister, Nancy, lives with her husband in Mephsis where both work for Fed Ex. Aunt Myrtle had us all over to her house last Christmas and we had a great time looking over old family pictures that I found when I was helping my father clean out his apartment. This was the first Christmas since my mother (Esther) died the previous January. She was 91 and had broken her hip approx a year earlier. Pop is 94 and seems to be doing well on his own. I brought him to Calif last summer with one of my nieces and have purchased a plane ticket for him again this summer along with my nephew. My sister still lives in Lees Summit, Mo. the city where my parents moved around 1960, the year my wife and I came to Calif to teach. The information that I ! got from Dennis Knierim from Indianapolis contained a lot of family history. Apparently his great grandfather was a brother to John Knierim, my great grandfather who is buried in the family plot between Deepwater and Lowery City Mo. I took Dad to the cemetery spring when I was back there. The plot also contains my grandfaather, John Calvin, my grandmother, Matilda, and two aunts who I was quite fond of while growing up. We lived across the road from grandpa and grandma all the time that I was in elem and high school. I have probably given you more than you wanted to know. When I have time I will look over the family tree info that Dennis sent me and share it with you. Good making contact with you. Aunt Velma will love hearing from your sister.
My name is Bill Berrier, grandson of John Calvin and Matilda Knierim. My mother was Esther Knierim, the oldest of seven children. Two aunts, Myrtle and Velma still reside in the Kansas City Kansas area. I ran across a letter from Dennis Knierim in my mothers belongings after her death and corresponded with him in Indianapolis Ind. He gave me the Knierim web site and access to your name. When I mentioned your name to my aunt in Shawnee Mission Kan she thinks that you are her cousin-son of Ben Knierim. I am a school supt in Encinitas, Calif and have done no research on the Knierim family but each time I go to the Kansas City area to visit my 94 year old father I also contact my aunts who I was very close to while growing up. Please send me a brief e-mail if my aunt has correctly identified you.
Jerry, Our branch came at two different times. Martha, Jacob, and Herman came from Bremen to Philadelphia on 29 May 1854 on the ship J Welch. Their parents Paul and Anna, along with Katherine and John came from Bremen to New York on 26 Dec 1855 on the ship VonStein (Merry Christmas). I don't know who the children stayed with during that first year until their parents arrived. I would like to find out. My next information comes from New Knoxville Ohio. I don't know if they stopped anywhere in between. m. Anna Catherine Diegel b. 27 July 1806 d. 29 Feb 1876 I hope to get to Ohio sometime this month to get copies of more family photos that are there. Mrs. Dorothy (Knierim) Berg in Wapakoneta has been wonderful in helping me find information. Both John and Jacob served in the Cival War while Herman stayed home to care for their parents and the farm. Well, I'd better close for now. If your mailing address on the directory is correct, I can mail you copies of ship's records, marriage certificates, death certificates, etc if you would like. Please, let me know. I also have some information on another branch that came from Chicago and stayed mostly in Illinois. If anyone is interested I might be able to give you a name to contact. Dennis Knierim
Jerry, It was good to find your Web Site. My great grandfather Herman and your great grandfather John were brothers. I have information on them starting with ship's passenger lists and picking them up in New Knoxville Ohio. Their parents Paul and Anna came over with the children: Elizabeth Martha, Katherine, Jacob, Herman and John in 1854 &1855. So far I've found about 600 people in this branch alone. I'm anxious to make the connection in Germany (probably Rotenburg an der Fulda) with the other branches. Please let me know if I can be of help. Dennis Knierim

I grew up on a farm about 5 miles from Knierim, Iowa. Were you related to the originators of this town? I don't know much about the history of the family. William and Wilhelmina Knierim offered railroad representatives the land right of way for the railroad, and a town was thus formed in November 1899. Lewis Knierim still lived in the town when I grew up there. He was a batchelor and died one winter, probably 20 years ago. I don't know if this will be a help to anyone but my maternal grandmother, EMMA KNIERIM, was born in New York City on October 22, 1872. She married Michael Fitzgerald supposedly in New York City 1892/1893??

<HTML><PRE>Subj: Re: Knierim Tree Date: 97-07-21 13:40:34 EDT From: cvancs@primenet.com (charles vancs) To: Jknierim@aol.com Dear Jerry, I am experimenting with my computer (I am fairly new to this stuff) to see how to get something from word perfect to e-mail. I don't know how to do this, but will read up on it to find out if it is possible. I hope you do not think I am "the mentally slow" Knierim, :) but I am new to computers and e-mail. I recieved the Knierim Newletter today and am looking forward to possibly finding a link with someone out there. I know that somewhere out there, there is a link with someone! I hope that person is on-line and will write to me. I will keep in touch. I really like this form of communication. It is so much easier to send it this way than through the post office. Two of my sisters are also on-line and there is a constant flow of letters between us. I only wish the rest of my family coudl get on-line also. It is so much easier to keep in touch. My brothers, sisters and I all moved away from our family hometown (Elyria, Oh), and my parents are still living there as are two sisters. We get together, but it is never enough. I now live in Northwood, which is near Toledo. Recently we had a wonderful experience that never would have happened without the internet. We located a brother who was separated from us because of divorce. We had not seen him for about 35 years. He lives in Louisiana and we got him up here for a wonderful family reunion. He is my father's oldest son and I am grateful that the reunion took place before my father's passing. My father is 78 years old and is in fairly good health but....you just never know. Anyway, it was a wonderful time together. Well, I have the habit of babbling which seems to be a family trait. Whenever this part of the family gets together, there is never a dull moment. I will close for now, sending best wishes and thanks for the communication. Respectfully, Dawn

<HTML><PRE>Subj: Re: knierim Date: 97-07-18 15:28:27 EDT From: cvancs@primenet.com (charles vancs) To: Jknierim@aol.com Dear Jerry, I feel like our branch of the Knierim's are the lost Knierim's. People tend not to believe me when I tell them the story of this branch. My Grandfather's tombstone reads "August Knierim" b. June 22, 1896 d. April 17, 1929. He is buried in Elmwood Cemetary in Elyria, Ohio. He drowned in a fishing boat accident and his sons (6 of them) were raised in an orphanage. Somehow in the transition to the orphanage, the name was changed to KNERIEN. I believe that my father's name (and his Brother's names) on his birth certificate is still the old spelling, but have yet to confirm that. I am just beginning my research. The information I do have was gleaned from my Grandmother's family Bible. I have up to my great, great, great Grandfather along with his wife's name (Martha Refert) and know (hopefully the infromation in the Bible is correct) that they were born in Germany. His name was coincidently John. Great! The fact that John is the most common name will make it harder to confirm the right link. At any rate, if you are interested, I will send the information to you and I would love to have you include this in your family tree. I will continue with my search, collecting documentation and confirming what I can. It is fun to do this, but frustrating at times. The family is in the Elyria-Lorain, Ohio area and I do not live there anymore, so it is hard to get back there to do the needed research without insulting the family with my absence. Thank You For Your Kind Attention, Dawn |
